Anthropocene
The view about human life suggests many things to us in the Anthropocene. The Anthropocene requires a new network of all kind of species connections beyond the distinction between humans and non- humans.
My 3D work has developed from concerns about the effects of the Anthropocene. This series of works titled
Variations is the result of melting 7kg soap and painting on each layer, hardening, breaking, and re-melting it to
form a lump. I poured molten soap into a molding case 7 times to create the effect of geological strata using
soap layers. I have painted on each layer of soap as if to suggest the earth has created layers. I imagined that
when I went to a mountain or a river beach, the cross section of a cliff or the outside of a large rock formed
several layers like a sandwich. 2kg of melted soap became one of the layers and my painting became sediment.
There are four complete paintings between seven layers. The layers of soap are suggest natural
deposits that are cut and broken by water, wind, plants, and people. Through this I imply that the act of painting
on it is an act of leaving human history, traces, and impact on nature. This also means that there is a time space
between layers. My painting has created time and space between the each of layers. As the artist I am aware of
each painting layer (human trace) but viewers are not able to see each layer clearly. The view for them is of
amorphous mass. We human don't know what we are building up in the earth but as an artist I want to
emphasize that like the viewers, humans cannot see the layers of sediment counting their traces in the earth.
After painting, I cut the strata into pieces of various sizes and then I displayed them to look like a collection of
shards or deposits used for useful research in the human activity. I melted all the pieces again. In
this process, all my paintings were broken down and dissolved. Then I poured the melted work into a big plastic
container box and the dissolved paints solidified in the bottom of the plastic container box. This is
to suggest a warning such as natural disasters and human crises, and it also shows that the dichotomous thinking
that distinguishes humans from nature means nothing. Human impact is also limited. The role of humans is not
absolute, and therefore humans cannot be the main agents of the system. The core concept of this work is to
remove humans from privileged species status and position them as one of many various creatures. In this way,
as an artist, I am able to breaks away from humanism and present an alternative world.
